Egg Shells and slugs...

We have been placing crushed egg shells around our strawberry plants to get rid of the slugs...I have to say I am not sure if this is working or not....I think the roughness of the shells is helping to inhibit their movement but not repelling them from eating our wonderful strawberries. I have read that you have to have 2 inches of egg shells to keep the slugs from moving over to the plants.

We will have our chicken coop built in the matter of weeks...so we will have many eggs before to long. I think I will keep trying the egg shells because I don't like using anything not organic...do you have any advice about slugs or how you keep them off your strawberries.

Happy Gardening..

slugs were making quick work of my cabbages. i didn't want to spray because the kids play in the beds nor would my little one leave the egg shells alone. the solution for us has been a pair of ducks. we've had the birds for a little over a month and the slug population is down and my cabbages are intact.

not only do they eat the critters, they leave my plants alone (unlike the chickens), they're great fun to watch and there's the possibiliy of eggs (they're too young yet to tell). i've never used duck eggs before but i hear they're heavenly for baking.

Slugs are also very fond of beer. I set out a shallow-ish pan of beer and they get in to take a drink and end up drowning in the stuff. Ha!
